Skye has a wonderful centre for reptiles and amphibians, well worth a visit if you're here.  Taking mainly snakes and lizards from illegal imports and unwanted pets, the Skye Serpentarium keep these animals in excellent enclosures totally supported from donations and sponsorship.  Some are taken out for visitors to hold, soon to realise they're not slimy, scary creatures, but lovely animals that make you want to understand them more.  We paid a visit, ended up staying for nearly two hours and sponsored a small red agamid lizard and a lovely royal python called Rhiannon.  I've never held a snake before so was pleasantly surprised how warm and solid it was, a very relaxing experience; we're quite tempted to have one of our own, but with our two cats around it may not be the best thing to do.  Catherine and Alex Shearer own the Skye Serpentarium and also have a huge collection of reptiles at their home.  Billy is the man who will tell you all about collection and let you have a close up cuddle with one of these wonderful creatures.  Visit the website at www.skyeserpentarium.org.uk
